The pharmacy technology degree program prepares students to enter the pharmacy technician field through extensive hands-on training. It is an excellent choice for students looking for career-focused training that goes beyond diploma training.
Students who complete the pharmacy technology program can compete for several types of entry-level technician positions, including:
Experienced pharmacist assistants can eventually focus in specific pharmaceutical areas, such as compounding, narcotics, IV, and chemotherapy/nuclear pharmacy. Other advanced positions include automation, dispensing, insurance, and purchasing technicians.
The Associate of Science pharmacy technician program can be completed in as little as 20 months, although this can vary by location. Courses focus on pharmacy technician operations - including professionalism, state and federal law, and ethical issues - and general education.
Each course stands alone as a unit of study and is not dependent upon prerequisite training. A student may enter the program at the beginning of any course and continue through the sequence until completion of all courses. The course work consists of lecture/demonstration and hands on laboratory procedures.
Some states require pharmacy technicians to obtain national and/or state certification.
Students will complete an externship in a hospital or retail setting, after successfully completing all classroom courses.
