Make Your Impression Before, During, After Interview

The economy isn’t good. Nothing we write will change that. But there are ways to stand out from the crowd of people who want the same jobs you’re looking at, too.

We recently came across a list of steps in The Huffington Post that you can take to make yourself stand out from the crowd even more. Even if you’ve already heard similar tips from Anthem College Online Career Services, it can’t hurt to read them once more!

  • Call the hiring manager or the human resources department before you send in an application. You won’t seem pushy to them. They might be receiving dozens or even hundreds of emails each day—a call makes you stand out and encourages them to look for your resume.
  • Treat the interview as seriously as an exam. In a way, it is an exam; it’s a test of your interpersonal skills and knowledge. Go to Career Services to practice for it.
  • Tell the interviewer that you’re the best fit for the job. Don’t make it sound like you’re overqualified—tell them how you will fit in and grow with this position.
  • Ask for the job. Tell the interviewer you want this job. This can be uncomfortable for you, but it will show how serious you are about it.
  • Ask for a business card and send a thank-you note within one week of the interview. Then you have had three direct contacts with this company. If you’re interviewing with a big company, it’s ok to email one to the person(s) who interviewed you as well.

Working with our Career Services really can improve your chances to land a job in the career you’ve studied for.
